Event Description

This month's Chocolate Wonk theme is London Calling (my apologies to The Clash) and is being sponsored in part by Hotel Chocolat (some exciting news on that front will be shared at the Wonk).

We'll be featuring work from Hotel Chocolat (naturally), Rococo, Artisan du Chocolat, and ChocolateLife member Duffy Sheardown's Red Star Chocolate - among others; I've got inquiries out to several other chocolatiers and I will update the event as I learn more.

The meeting fee is $10 for ChocolateWonk members, who are invited to pay at the door - same price.

Non-members can pay the $10 meeting fee in advance or pay $15 cash at the door.

There is also a two-drink minimum. Soft-drinks are available for $3 and Jimmy's excellent selection of beers ranges from $6-14. Jimmy's accepts cash only.

Rococo Chocolates - Basil with lime & cardamon
Artisan du Chocolat- Bali 72%, Jamaica 72%, Orchard w/
orange blossom 72% Duffy Red Star-Corazon del Ecuador 72% and beta Brazil bar 70%
Hotel Chocolat-Rabot Estate bars, St Lucia. 70% Dark Chuao, 80% & 90% Dark Hacienda Iara & 65% w/ chilies.
Willies-69% Indonesia, 70% Peru

Comment by Clay Gordon on May 12, 2010 at 1:15pm: Duffy posted elsewhere that he sent 3 bars of "Corazon del Ecuador" 72% and 3 development bars of "Heart of Brazil" 70% for the next Wonk meeting.

The Brazil bars are so new the don't have wrappers yet. They were made using fellow The Chocolate Life member Jim Lucas' beans and I took samples to my launch at the London Real Food Festival last weekend.

Comments on the Brazil:
1. Warm, chocolatey, coffee at first, slightly burnt aftertaste. Some mould.

2. Fruity, nice grassiness, fresh.

3. Very fruity, would use as a couverture with the cocoa butter reduced.

Comments on the Corazon del Ecuador:
1. TheChocolateReview site said: a "safe" bar. Slight cherry and marzipan.
2. Martin at seventypercent.com said: treacle toffee, over-ripe banana, mulled wine, gentle citrus, raisins and powdered ginger. Tannic aftertaste like black tea.
