Ben Ripple mention IMOs (Institute for Marketecology) Social for Life (it's actually Fair for Life). I thought it useful to break out the comment stream into its own discussion.

From the home page of the site.

"Fair for life is a brand neutral third party certification programme for social accountability and fair trade in agricultural, manufacturing and trading operations. The programme complements existing fair trade certification systems.

<snip>

Our quality guarantee
IMO Social & FairTrade Certification guarantees that human rights are guaranteed at any stage of production, that workers enjoy good and fair working conditions and that smallholder farmers receive a fair share."

I downloaded the certification guidelines document and found it to be typical of all such systems - one way. There is absolutely NO discussion of the procedures in place that enable IMO to back its guarantee that it guarantees "... that smallholder farmers receive a fair share."

Any thoughts on how this works, Ben?
