The International Chocolate Awards aims to highlight the best in fine chocolate to consumers by judging bars and filled chocolates (bonbons, pralines, ganaches) in national and regional rounds with a Grand Final judging the best of the best. The first year, 2012 included rounds in Italy, the UK, the USA with the first year’s Grand Final in the UK in October, coinciding with Chocolate Week. 2013 added an Israeli national competition and other country rounds are in development.
Entries to the Awards are welcomed from both international chocolate makers and chocolatiers.

This year's Americas Semi-final round is now open to receive entries.
The Semi-finals judge plain/origin dark, milk and white bars and all other categories, except for countries that have their own competition.
The competition is open to North and South American and Caribbean companies, plus Asia Pacific entrants who did not enter the European Semi-final.
The closing date for entries is 19 June with samples required by 21 June, so please get your entries in soon. You can find full details and enter online at www.internationalchocolateawards.com/enter.
Following the results of our Entrants and Industry surveys, this year we've added new white chocolate categories for flavoured bars and filled chocolates and a new 'mixed' category for filled chocolates with combinations of dark, milk or white chocolate used for the filling and coating.
Full details of the rules and categories can be downloaded in PDF form here.
We look forward to your entries and good luck to all entrants!

European and Italian winners
A belated update here about our first two completed competitions. We're now half way through our first year of the International Chocolate Awards, with successful competitions already held in London for the European World Semi-final, and in Florence for the Italian National Competition.
The Italians were the first country to get their own competition in the Awards, and as such were not able to enter the European Semi-final. Their winners though go straight through to the World Final in London in October. You can find a full list of the Italian winners here.
Plain and origin chocolate bars were a reserved category and all entries for these, including Italian, were judged in London. Recognising the best origin chocolate is central to the philosophy of the Awards, so it was important that these are judged side-by-side as much as possible.
You can find a full list of the European winners here, including the best European, Italian, French, Swiss, Organic and Directly Traded Gold winners.
Thanks to all those who have worked so hard this year to make the awards happen, next we're on to New York for the Americas Semi-final and Vancouver for the Canadian National Competition.

Silver for Original Beans Beni Wild Harvest! Thank you so much!
Congratulations to all the winners! Chocolove, Vera
Just to update any European readers - the European semi-final of the International Chocolate Awards, to be judged in London, is now open for entries. You can complete the forms online here: http://www.internationalchocolateawards.com/entry-forms/
The online entries should be completed as soon as possible (payment is taken online also). Samples are due by 25 May 2012.
We can accept entries from anywhere in Europe, Asia, Africa, etc. The Americas semi-final round will be announced shortly and will be judged in New York in September.
Entrants from the Asia-Pacific region can choose which of the two semi-finals is best for them to enter, but can only enter one of these.
The winners of the semi-finals and winners of the Italian national competition will go through to the Grand Final, which this year will be in London in October during Chocolate Week.
We are also pleased to say that a Canadian National competition is under discussion and will be announced shortly. More national competitions will be considered for next year.
Vera and Scott, you are both correct, it was an error copying the awards up to the website, which has now been corrected. There were some other dark categories though were there were either no entries or no awards given.
Thanks for pointing it out!
I noticed they changed the list. Now there are two award winners in the category I mentioned in my earlier comment :-)
Thanks Martin and Scott for your explanations.
It looks like they may have collapsed the milk and dark categories for gianduia, Vera, since neither of the two winning gianduiotti (A. Giordano and Guido Castagna, both extraordinary and deserving of the honor) contain any dairy products.
Hi Vera, it turned out that most of the gianduja and cremino products had milk powder in them, so either most of the entries were already in the milk category or there were a few we had to move. Of the remaining entries in that category, none scored high enough to be considered for an award.
There were also a few other categories where there were no entries that made the grade. Products need to achieve a score that's in line with the winning scores for the whole competition to be given an award, being best in a category is not necessarily enough. The Grand Jury also sits at the end and double checks that the best in category are good enough to receive awards.
This was the first year for the Italian competition, and while there were 100 products to judge, we expect more entries next year and you'll probably see less categories without a winner.
I hope that helps!
Martin

Congratulations Paul: 4 awards! :-)
Martin, Can you explain why in some categories no awards were given? Especially the dark nut based pralines and gianduja? The best are from Italy in my opinion: Paul de Bondt, Gobino, Castagna...
