I did not know this before dinner, but the beer produced at the Trappist Abbey of St Sixtus has an international reputation for quality ... and for being very hard to get. So, when the proprietor of La Boussole mentioned to Laurent that he had some on hand when we asked about beer, it was a natural.
10.2% ABV. This is one of the beers that gives beer its reputation for being food. Great texture on the head, bready, yeasty, caramelly goodness. The bottles are no-deposit, no-return, so I am bringing mine back with me as the only non-chocolate souvenir of my trip.
