Most memorable chocolate experience:
I was freezing cold in my sundress, way up in San Jose del Pacifico in the Sierra Madre del Sur de Oaxaquena, 1973. I had no idea it could be so cold in Mexico, just having left Oaxaca City's heat. My 1st bowl of dark,steaming hot chocolate con agua, redolent of cinnamon & almonds, warmed my body & ignited my soul. It's hypnotic fragrance held me spellbound. Was it the elevation of 9,000 feet that made me woozy or was it the ancient drink of the Maya (later the Aztecs) that made my head spin like I was in love for the first time? All I know is that on that chilly morning a life-long love affair with Mexican chocolate was born. I later learned that it was the wooden molinillo, spun in the deft hands of Senora Valdez, that created the sacred foam adorning the top of my chocolate. I also learned that authentic chocolate didn't originate in tins from the Piggly Wiggly but from the roasted beans of cacao trees growing in Southern Mexico. Many years later, my love of chocolate led me back to Oaxaca and to the Mexican states of Tabasco & Chiapas where I met up with Elaine and also Susana Trilling's chocolate tours. Now I feel like I know everything about the precious cacao bean; from chocolate soup to chocolate nuts. Chocolate in all of its mysterious and elegant guises, from humble origins; always delicious to the last drop (and nibble).

Thanks for the comment, Jamie, and hope you like the book. I was recently in Paris and managed to visit some of my favourite chocoltiers, including a new one for me, Patrick Roger. Absolutely sublime! I'd like to do what you're doing one day too - to go the the heart of the chocolate experience. That's where it all begins. Most of us only ever experience where it ends... Not that there's anything inglorious in that of course. I'd love to know how you get on.

Jamie, how wonderful to hear from you! I, too, remember that evening and the great time we had. It would have been even better if you all could have joined us the rest of the time. It was a bittersweet trip for me, knowing that it was my last, but I will always remember it as havng been one of the best. If you will send me your address, I'll send you a calendar that Peter's Chocolate printed this year to commemorate that trip. Let's do keep in touch. I hope our chocolate paths meet again soon.
