Rebekka Hyclak joined Clay Gordon's groupI have been cooking and baking for as long as I remember. My first memory of "cooking" was at my grandma's. She was making a big lunch for they guys who were putting up hay and she gave me a bowl, a spoon, some crackers, cheese and a few other random ingredients. I arranged the crackers on the plate, placed cheese on top and asked her to put them in the microwave until the cheese melted. Then I put the rest of the ingredients on top as garnish and finished it all with black pepper...I called it cracker nachos and my grandpa just raved over them. Of course, this is the same grandpa who would order 500 cheeseburgers and 10lbs of shrimp whenever we played restaurant...I think he just liked to see me smile!
Fast forward 20 years and here I am, 25, a Registered Nurse and a small business owner. My love for food and making people smile has gotten me where I am today. My favorite foods to work with are cake, sugar and chocolate. I am mostly self-taught. I grew up reading cookbooks for fun and anytime I watched TV I was/am glued to Food Network and any other channel that has food on it. I can remember many afternoons sitting on my grandpa's lap watching Graham Kerr with him and then heading to the kitchen with my grandma. My grandpa died before he had the chance to sample many of my creations, but my grandma was always happy to taste-test and would tell me how much my grandpa would have liked what I made (even if I knew something was a complete flop!).
So, it is my grandparents, both of whom I miss very much, I have to thank for my love of all things food and the motivation to keep going even when stuff "flops".
My business, Hyclass Confections, LLC is a small home-based confectionery. I make hand-rolled truffles in about a dozen different flavors, but am always adding new flavors and open to ideas. My dream is to have a store-front someday offering Westerville, Ohio fresh, delicious chocolates...and smiles with every bite!
