Brief Biography

I work as a hospitalist in the Phoenix, Arizona, metropolitan area. My training was in internal medicine in Austin, TX, (USA) after competing medical school in Oklahoma City, OK.

My patients often have illnesses that could have been prevented or mitigated by good nutrition, especially by avoiding excess fat weight. I can do much to help my patients while they are in the hospital for 4-5 days, but I can't totally reverse the consequences of adverse metabolic processes that have been going on for years.

So I'm increasingly interested in prevention of medical conditions and death through diet and exercise. My review of the scientific literature led me to embrace the traditional Mediterranean diet as probably the best all-around diet for preventing premature death and many chronic diseases such as heart attacks, strokes, type 2 diabetes, cancer (breast, prostate, uterus, colon), and dementia.

To help my patients lose excess weight while getting healthier with the Mediterranean diet, I wrote The Advanced Mediterranean Diet. A free stripped-down version is available here.

I found "The Chocolate Life" while researching the potential health benefits of dark chocolate. Thanks to Clay Gordon for putting it together!
