Most memorable chocolate experience:
Oh my goodness ... I will die before anyone pries my chocolate secrets from my very long memory. Aside from that, I am the founder and owner of Trifles, which is a chocolate and pastry boutique (we've added a coffee shop at another location) and Home Chocolate Party, which is a lifestyle group dedicated to educating, selling and entertaining people with gourmet chocolate and all accoutrements.
My favorite chocolate is:

Bodies of Evidence

During my freshman year of college, I had the experience of working in a hospital kitchen. In retrospect, this was a formative food experience and has helped me to shape my attitudes and to take responsibility for the food I produce. There were a number of positions I occupied in the kitchen. One was that of a line server. A line server had to quickly scan the menu card on a tray and place the appropriate food item on the tray as it travelled down the conveyor belt. Another position was in the… Continue

The Inner Food Muse

How does one begin the task of knowing one's self? It is an inward journey which some never take. Much observation, objectivity, and yes, painful admissions can fracture fragile egos if one does not savor portions of the discovery. My own journey has been one of acceptance. Acceptance of who I am, who I was meant to be and a moral obligation to be of service to others. We belong to the culture of "humanity" and must find ways to interact and fit in with our society. After all, what good is tale… Continue

Wow - mark your calendars

Reporting from the NCA All Candy Expo, which miraculously was held in tandem with the Nat'l Restaurant Assoc. Convention. So many foodies in Chicago at one time boggles my mind. Irma and I had a nice time listening to an esteemed panel of choco experts speak about trends in chocolate. We also had a great sneak peek at a master, Joseph Schmidt, working his magic with chocolate art from the floor of the convention. Today, I will get to hear and see what Jacques Torres has to share with his liste… Continue

How Embarrassing ... Yet Intriguing

The other day, one of my vendors unequivocally stated, that a certain Amarena cherry in Vodka piece, sold from a Manhattan chocolatier, was orgasmic. Being a literally minded person, I felt it was my duty to tell him, in no uncertain terms, that chocolate has never given me an orgasm and never will. How about you? I am not troubled by the fact that chocolate does not send me into the throes of ecstasy. Perhaps I am boring you when I suggest that chocolate is chocolate and orgasms are orgasms. I… Continue

An Evolutionary Tale of Chocolate/Beware the Gold Ballotin/The "Michigan" Connection

Lest we forget ... this is a look at the dark and bitter side of chocolate. A very twisted case of "high"er education. He is no longer with us, God rest his soul. PROFESSOR PLEADS GUILTY IN POISONED CANDY CASE PermalinkBy ARNOLD H. LUBASCH Published: June 10, 1987 A former head of the anthropology department at New York University pleaded guilty yesterday to mailing valentine boxes of poisoned chocolates to a former colleague and a Federal judge. The guilty plea to the Federal charges was made… Continue

I'll see your German education and raise you a German upbringing. Although, it has gotten me into trouble in the past, so I try to be more like my Dutch dad! Nice to have you as a friend. Your desserts look tempting!

Hi Gwen,
I just signed up to be a member. I was looking through the member infos and yours caught my eye because we have a few things in common. I lived in Southfield and worked in Detroit for four years and Traffic Jam was one of my favorite places to go. That was where I tasted my first Tiramisu. It was when I lived in Michigan that my boyfriend ( now my husband) gave me the tools for making truffles and that is what started my interest in working with chocolate. I have worked in teaching myself all about chocolate. Now, almost twenty years later I am still in very much interested in working and learning about chocolate. I am in the beginning phases of starting a small business. Where is Whitelake exactly? I am going to be in Petoskey end of March to visit the inlaws. Looking forward to hearing from you and the other members.

I just finished uploading pictures from charitable events at which Trifles provided artisanal chocolates to the general public, I hope these pictures inspire others to do the same. Participating in charitable events and "giving back" to the community has been Trifles standard practice since opening in 2001.

We support annually:
The Alzheimers' Association at the Annual Chocolate Jubilee at the Ritz Carlton in Dearborn, Michigan;
Taste of the Lakes to benefit Lakes Area Youth Assistance at Edgewood Country Club in Commerce, Michigan;
Jazz on Orchard Lake to benefit Orchard Lake St. Mary's Prepartory School, Orchard Lake Michigan;
Artrageous, to benefit Art Education in metropolitan Detroit, Detroit, Michigan;
Huron Valley Sinai Hospital Women's Health Expo;
LACC Heart of the Lakes Gala to benefit Huron Valley Sinai Cardiac Care Unit at Shenandoah Country Club, West Bloomfield, Michigan;
and many others ....

I believe that we must create and strengthen markets for high quality chocolates in this country by going into the field to sample and educate the public regarding current practices and products in our industry.
